 The Department


The Department of Physics at Southern Illinois University Carbondale offers undergraduate study, graduate study, and research leading to the B.S. degree in Physics, the M.S. degree in Physics, and the Ph.D. degree in Physics. The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs which emphasize fundamental topics in Physics and encourage active participation in cutting-edge research. Students continuing toward the doctorate may work with Physics faculty members who are affiliated with the doctoral program in Engineering Science. The Department has fourteen  faculty members working in various areas of experimental and theoretical Physics.

 The University


Since its chartering in 1869, Southern Illinois University Carbondale has grown into a comprehensive University with a student body of approximately 24,000 at its Carbondale campus. Supported by the State of Illinois, the University offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, medicine, and law. The objective of Southern Illinois University is to provide a comprehensive educational program which meets a student's needs. The scenic main campus occupies 981 acres and includes a wooded area preserved in a natural state, a lake with a beach and swimming area, canoe and boat rental facilities, a walking (or jogging trail), and fishing piers.
The campus provides an array of cultural activities. There are frequent performances by opera, theater, symphony and dance groups, given by both local and traveling performers. The campus also has an educational radio and television stations that serve all of southern Illinois.
