Homework:

Homework assignments will be given during class. The homework will not be graded. However, working with these homework assignments is essential to succeed in this class since the problems in the exams will be based on homework problems.

The solutions of all homework problems will be posted on the web as well as lecture notes, under http://www.physics.siu.edu/people/calbi/fall2004/203A/homework/ (You have to be on the SIUC domain to open the solution pages).

A WORD OF CAUTION: It is not enough to read the solutions of the problems from the web! You should try the problems on your own and look for help if you find yourself stacked for solving many of them (Use office hours, problem solving sessions, helpdesk).  If you are not able to solve the homework problems on your own after a period of reasonable effort, it is very likely that the same will happen in the exams!!!

Look for help BEFORE this happens!

Exams:

There will be 5 (five) exams during the semester and a comprehensive final exam. The dates and topics for the mid-semester exams will be announced in class and on this website. They will be administered during lecture hours. Tentative dates are:

Midterm 1: Friday, February 3

Midterm 2: Monday, February 20

Midterm 3: Wednesday, March 8

Midterm 4: Wednesday, April 5

Midterm 5: Wednesday, April 26

You will not be allowed to consult the textbook or notes during the exams. An official equation sheet will be provided. It is strongly recommended that you use this sheet when doing homework problems since you will be able to use it also during the exams. Writing any additional information on the sheet is not permitted.

The exams will be multiple choice but it will be possible to get partial credit for questions, according to the following rules:

> If you circle one answer, and that is the correct one, then you get full credit.

> If you circle two answers, including the correct one, you get 2/3 of full credit.

> If you circle three answers, including the correct one, you get 1/3 of full credit.

> If you circle more than three answers, do not circle any answer, or if the circled answers do not include the correct one, you do not get any credit.

The lowest score of the first 3 exams will be dropped automatically. If you miss an exam, it will be counted as your dropped exam.

No make up exams will be given.

The final exam is comprehensive and will be given at the time and place set by the University in its final exam schedule.

Grading:

Your course grade will be completely determined by your 4 highest exam grades and your homework grade. These will be weighted as follows:

Midterm 1:          22 %

Midterm 2:          22 %

Midterm 3:          22 %

Midterm 4:          22 %

Homework:         12 %

Final Grade:

87 % - 100  %   = A

77 % - 86.9 %   = B

65 % - 76.9 %   = C

55 % - 64.9 %   = D
